Feb. 5th, 2008 07:37 am About "A gateway to Sindarin"

"A Gateway to Sindarin

By David Salo. (University of Utah Press, 2004. 438 pp.)

This book presents an exhaustive synthesis and systematization of what is more accurately termed "Neo-Sindarin": that is, an altered, synthetic form of Sindarin not as Tolkien ever conceived of it but instead as cobbled together by Salo himself through selective re-use and modification of attested Noldorin forms (which in fact form the vast bulk of the evidence for Salo's "Sindarin") in admixture with actual Sindarin forms and with forms wholly invented by the author. As such, the book misrepresents itself (throughout, and even in its very title) to anyone looking for a reliable examination and presentation of Tolkien's own Sindarin, but if the actual nature of Salo's "Sindarin" is borne in mind throughout, and if the reader assiduously checks the sources against all of Salo's claims and (supposed) data (that is, where the data are not fabricated by Salo, and to the extent allowed by Salo's sparse and often misleading citation of sources), this book can be useful for the student as an introduction to a more accurate and detailed study of Tolkien's own Sindarin(s)."

How To Opt Out Of
Yahoo's New 'Web Beacon'

If you belong to ANY Yahoo Group - be aware that Yahoo is now using "Web
Beacons" to track the Internet navigation of every Yahoo user. It's similar
to cookies, but allows Yahoo to record every website And every group you
visit -ANYWHERE- on the Internet, even when you're Not connected to Yahoo.

To stop this privacy invasive surveillance, go to Yahoo's updated privacy
statement at:

info.yahoo.com/privacy/us/yahoo/webbeacons/details.html

In the section marked Outside the Yahoo Network click the hyperlinked: Click
here, to opt out. Note what is says about different computers AND different
Web Browsers, if you use different ones.
______________________________________________
Web Beacons

Web pages may contain an electronic file called a web beacon, that allows a
web site to count users who have visited that page or to access certain
cookies. Yahoo! uses web beacons in the following ways:

Within the Yahoo! Network

* Yahoo! uses web beacons within the Yahoo! network of web sites in order to
count users and to recognize users by accessing Yahoo! cookies. * Being able
to access Yahoo! cookies allows us to personalize your experience when you
visit Yahoo! web sites that are located both on and off of the yahoo.com
domain. For example, Yahoo! GeoCities pages are mostly located on the
geocities.com domain.

Outside the Yahoo! Network

* Yahoo! uses web beacons to conduct research on behalf of certain partners
on their web sites and also for auditing purposes.
* Information recorded through these web beacons is used to report anonymous
individual and/or aggregate information about Yahoo! users to our partners.
Aggregate information may include demographic and usage information. No
personally identifiable information about you is shared with partners from
this research.
* When conducting research Yahoo!'s practice is to require our partners to
disclose the presence of these web beacons on their pages in their privacy
policies and state what choices are available to users regarding the
collection and use of this information. You may choose to opt-out of Yahoo!
using this information for this research. Please click here to opt-out.

Note: This opt-out applies to a specific browser rather than a specific
user. Therefore you will have to opt-out separately from each computer or
browser that you use.

HTML Mail

* Yahoo!'s practice is to include web beacons in HTML-formatted email
messages (messages that include graphics) that Yahoo!, or its agents, sends
in order to determine which email messages were opened and to note whether a
message was acted upon.

In general, any file served as part of a web page, including an ad banner,
can act as a web beacon. Yahoo! may also include web beacons from third
parties and affiliates within pages served by Yahoo! so that Yahoo!'s
advertisers may receive auditing, research and reporting.

You scored as Ostara. This is a very powerful time not only because of the balancing of the earth's energies, but because of the way our own beings echo the earth's changes. We are literally reborn as we emerge from our winter sleep, ready to partake of all the pleasures of the earth, and to meet the challenges we will face as the world changes around us daily.

Feb. 27th, 2006 08:26 am New bag limits on lawyers for Chainey

This is no mah faut. Someone sent it to me ...

Texas Hunting Statutes

In light of the recent unfortunate events concerning the Vice President, a new bill has been introduced in the Texas legislature as follows:

Bill to Regulate the Hunting and Harvesting of Attorneys.
370.01 Any person with a valid in-state rodent or snake hunting license may also hunt and harvest attorneys for recreational and sport (non-commercial) purposes.
370.02 Taking of attorneys with traps or deadfalls is permitted. The use of United States currency as bait, however, is prohibited.
370.03 Stuffed or mounted attorneys must have a state health department inspection for rabies, and vermin.
370.04 The willful killing of attorneys with a motor vehicle is prohibited, unless such vehicle is an ambulance being driven in reverse. If an attorney is accidentally struck by a motor vehicle, the dead attorney should be removed to the roadside, and the vehicle should proceed immediately to the nearest car wash.
370.05 It is unlawful to chase, herd or harvest attorneys from a power boat, helicopter or aircraft.
370.06 It is unlawful to shout, "WHIPLASH", "AMBULANCE", or "FREE SCOTCH" for the purposes of trapping attorneys.
370.07 It is unlawful to hunt attorneys within 100 yards of BMW, Mercedes or Porsche dealerships, except on Wednesday afternoon.
370.08 It is unlawful to hunt attorneys within 200 yards of courtrooms, law libraries, health clubs, country clubs, hospitals or brothels.
370.09 If an attorney gains elective office, it is not necessary to have a license to hunt, trap or possess the same.
370.10 It is unlawful for a hunter to wear a disguise as a reporter, drug dealer, pimp, female legal clerk, sheep, accident victim, bookie, physician, chiropractor, company CEO, United States president or vice president, or tax accountant for the purpose of hunting attorneys.
370.11 Bag and Possession Limits per day:
Yellow-bellied sidewinders, 2;
Two-faced tortfeasors, 1;
Back-stabbing divorce litigators, 3;
Horn-rimmed cut-throats, 2;
Minutiae-advocating dirtbags, 4.
Honest attorneys protected (Endangered Species Act).

Feb. 23rd, 2006 04:33 pm Well, a first for King George

I just though we might breath a sigh of relieve. You see, King George has agreed to a "slight delay" before allowing DP on the eastern seaboard. Now, when I was growing up, DP was ... errrh ... nasty and only for the "experienced" people. You just had to know how. Now, after six years of bending over and taking it, we are going to get DP.

Wonderful.

Oh .. DP World is Dubai Ports World. Dubai, remember Dubai? Ok, remember the Cole? I thought that might bring up some nice memories.

-------------------------------------------
According to the U.S. government, 13 of the 19 hijackers entered the United States between April 23 and June 29, 2001. And 11 of those late-arrivers - who were Saudi citizens and primarily the "muscle" for the hijackings - went through Dubai, according to the report.

he hijackers traveled in groups of two or three, taking off from Dubai and arriving at airports in Miami, Orlando, Fla., or New York City, the report said.

As for the money trail, Bin Laden's alleged financial manager, Mustafa Ahmed al-Hisawi, received at a Dubai bank a transfer of $15,000 two days before the Sept. 11 attacks and then left the Emirates for Pakistan, where he was arrested last year.

About half of the $250,000 spent on the attacks was wired to al-Qaida terrorists in the United States from Dubai banks, authorities said. Al-Qaida money in Dubai banks also has been linked to the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania.

Now, doesn't it just warm your heart to know that these same people are now going to be running the ports? I am just tickled pink. As in the kind of pink you get when hit by shrapnel from suicide bombers ...

You scored as Spiritualist. You are a Spiritualist. You are most at home in the subtle realms of existence, and since you can't be there all the time, you communicate with spirits regularly to keep at least one foot on higher planes. As you progress, more and more of your interaction is based on planes other than the physical, and while this can draw strange glances from those who overhear, for the most part you are able to blend in and go unnoticed. It's a shame, really, because you have depths therefore unseen by your peers.

Feb. 17th, 2006 05:38 am L'etat, ce moi

For those who may have missed it, your veep was hunting illegally. You can't shoot a lawyer unless you have a $7.00 hunting stamp, which they made him buy after the fact.

When I tried to explain to my cousing Adelbert you could hunt lawyers now, he just could not believe it.

Adelbert: You mean, if I shoot someone they won't jail me?
Me: Well, they didn't jail Chainey, so I guess not.
Adelbert: But, let's say I don't shoot a lawyer. Maybe I shot someone I just though was a quail, and he turned out to be a lawyer.
Me: Well, by golly, that was what happenned to Mr. Chainey, too. So, I guess you don't have to worry. He thought a lawyer was a quail and just couldn't not pull that trigger.
Adelbert: Do they have a speical stamp for lawyers? I mean, let's say I shoot a door-to-door salesman. Can I get a special hunting stamp for that one too? Just pepper him with bird shot.
Me: ... well ... I don't know. You aren't the vice president you know. Maybe they have special rules for them.
Adelbert: You mean they have special rules for the Vice President? Just like they used to do with Kings? WOW! That's neat. I don't have to say "Your Majesty", do I?

And so it goes ...

Feb. 17th, 2006 05:23 am It is good to be the king ...

According to the Guardian The Bush administration made an emergency request to Congress yesterday for a seven-fold increase in funding to mount the biggest ever propaganda campaign. I wonder how much of it is going to make shooting lawyers without a hunting stamp worth more than a $7.00 find. The article went on to say that Condy Rice claimed "said the $75m (£43m) in extra funds, on top of $10m already allocated for later this year, would be used to broadcast US radio and television programmes into Iran". Which proves, at least, they are still ignoring the conventions against torture ...

Whoopee!!! Chainey is free for shooting a lawyer and almost killing him, but poor guy is going to spend the rest of his life in the graybar hotel because he kissed a woman's neck. Oh, it's not as bad as it sounds. He did it twice before.

Yep, that makes him too dangerous to live among the rest of us saints ...
